Community Leadership Class Learns about Community and Building Relationships

The Heart of Wisconsin Community Leadership Program completed its second session at Bullseye Golf Club. The day was facilitated by Tari Jahns from the United Way of Southwood and Adams County, along with Kurt Heuer from the Boys & Girls Club. This all-day session was filled with community education and relationship building.

As a part of this community leadership program, all participants are asked to read The 7 Habits for Highly Effective People by Stephen R. Covey. Each monthly session begins by discussing one of the 7 habits within the book. Paul Liebhert, School District of Nekoosa, began the morning session reviewing Habit 1: Be Proactive, then discussing Habit 2: Begin with the End. Next, Dr. Falk and Dr. Olson of the Aspirus Health System and the Public Health department talked to our group about how COVID-19 is affecting our community. The morning concluded with a panel of 11 local community agencies sharing their resources and purpose for helping the community.

The day continued with a variety of additional presentations from the McMillian Library, the United Way and the Civility Project-Speak Your Peace. The director of the library shared all of the wonderful resources the library has to offer and all that is to come after the renovations are completed. The CEO of United Way shared the South Wood & Adams Counties Agenda for Change which included Building Blocks for a Better Life as well as Safety Net Services. We were then educated by Kurt Heuer and Chuck Price on a Civility Project, Speak Your Peace. This project consists of 9 simple tools to communicate in a respectful way. The afternoon concluded with reflections of the entire day and what each person was taking away from participating in this session. Everyone walked away with various hand-outs filled with information and knowledge of the community programs and resources that Wisconsin Rapids and the surrounding areas have to offer.

I am pleased to be a part of this community leadership program and look forward to the sessions ahead.
